China's construction of a hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River has undergone rigorous scientific assessment, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, adding that it will not negatively impact the ecological environment, geological conditions, or water resource rights of downstream countries. Guo made the remarks in response to inquiry that India said it conveyed concerns to China over building hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo river.
On the contrary, to some extent the project can contribute to disaster prevention and mitigation efforts and support climate change adaptation in downstream regions, Guo noted.
